Steps-by-Steps Methods on How to Do Market Research

Market research methods used by focus groups have a few steps. First you watch whatever junk they’re showing you, then you have to take a survey, and finally discuss it with the group. The market research focus group discussion was mildly entertaining. Apparently, this is not the first of the market research focus groups to look at this pilot. They had already been through a few drafts of it, and no one liked it. I found that kind of gratifying. It made me feel better about wasting an afternoon looking at this nonsense.

Basically, the goal was to come up with the catchiest, most contagious slogans that we could. Everything else was secondary. We did not bother with market research marketing. Our clients wanted slick, young, stylish people to tell them where to throw their money. And they threw lots of it at us all the time and others can also find in the research blog.

We would basically corral college students on their way to and from classes by a little kiosk. We would give them cheap little knickknacks and doodads, t-shirts and binders and organizers, as a way to bribe them to take a few minutes to fill out a survey.
