Web Tension Control
If you’re trying to increase productivity in your converting facility while maintaining a high web material quality, consider implementing web tension control processes to measure and control tension. As a web of film, foil, paper, plastic or other material leaves one roller and is pulled by another, tension forms on either one end of the web or the other. If this tension is not somehow controlled, whether digitally or manually, the material will become damaged or distorted. Thankfully, there are a number of tension controllers on the market to help with this process. Digital controllers measure the tension and convert it to a signal so the machinery can be adjusted to the initial set point or reference, which is usually set by the machine’s operator prior to starting a run. This keeps the material tension at an even level during the entire process, thus reducing loss of material during a run.
If your facility has machinery that uses an older DC motor, there are manufacturers that still produce innovative microcontrollers to help with web tension control needs. Look for new digital microcontrollers that can be used for multiple applications. Carotron, Inc. manufactures these types of controllers and many other control products. You can speak with an engineer directly to determine the best web tension control product for your application. From Din-Rail mountable controls to full-feature DC and AC drives, it’s easier than ever to promote smooth operation throughout your web handling facility!
